Organization & Position Overview

Kansas City Young Audiences (KCYA) is one of the largest arts education providers in the midwest region with a mission to: engage all youth in the arts, promote creativity and inspire success in education. KCYA believes that every child deserves the transformational spark the arts ignite. Through interactive workshops, residencies, performances and professional development, KCYA programs strengthen a child’s understanding of necessary educational concepts and teach educators how to successfully integrate the arts into core educational subjects.

The Director of the Community School of the Arts (CSA) oversees and advances the implementation and evaluation of high-quality arts classes and camps for children that take place in KCYA’s building located at 3732 Main Street. 

 

Responsibilities

Vision & Leadership

  • Create and deliver high quality, innovative, arts programming across multiple arts disciplines, in keeping with KCYA’s mission, through collaboration with Teaching Artists and designated staff.
  • Provide leadership, vision, and strategic direction for the CSA team.
  • In collaboration with the Executive Director, design and hold the vision for strategic program growth, including establishing long and short-term goals.
  • With the Executive Director, develop policies and best practices around CSA programs
  • Assist the Director of Arts Education with communication between Teaching Artists, other staff, the Executive Director, and the Board of Directors.

 

Programming

  • Create CSA programs that feature diverse arts experiences and course offerings.
  • Create and maintain a master calendar one year in advance.
  • Facilitate enrollment procedures and enroll students in classes.
  • Award tuition scholarships based on scholarship criteria.
  • Recruit Teaching Artists.
  • With Director of Arts Education, create and implement professional development opportunities for Teaching Artists.
  • Recruit and train CSA team members and Interns, as needed.
  • Manage CSA substitute lists and support substitute teachers on-site.
  • Oversee CSA data coordination, database management, and mass communication.
  • Create, disseminate, collect, and analyze Student Impact and Parent Impact Surveys.
  • Assist Director of Marketing with CSA marketing opportunities

 

Budget & Finance

  • Collaborate with the Executive Director and designated staff in building the annual budget.
  • Manage the budget in collaboration with designated staff (as it relates to program supplies, costumes, and other CSA-related purchases.)
  • Approve Teaching Artist and Substitute Teaching Artist invoices.
  • Liaise with Development team to explore funding opportunities

 

Community Building

  • Make regular contact with individual families within the programs to demonstrate support and build relationships. 
  • Build relationships in the community to grow programs and offer scholarship opportunities to students when needed
  • Assist Director of Arts Education in strengthening existing partnerships with local arts organizations and other community partners
  • With Director of Arts Education, facilitate interaction among Teaching Artists to create community and encourage collaboration and creativity.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications

  • 3-5 years leadership experience in arts education and programming, especially working with beginning students and children of diverse ethnic and economic backgrounds
  • Excellent interpersonal and leadership skills
  • Strong communication, writing, and organizational skills
  • A sense of humor
  • Bachelor’s Degree, Master’s Degree preferred

 

Compensation & Benefits

This position is full time and considered an exempt position. Salary Range: $60,000-65,000. It requires limited travel, flexible work hours, and regular presence during CSA camps and classes, which often include evenings and weekends.  Benefits include an Employer-Provided Health Plan, 401(k) Retirement Plan with Employer match, and Paid Holidays and Personal Days.
