Kevin “Church” Johnson is a midwestern mix plate of old school soul music with a millennial twist of spicy and sweet BBQ. Born and raised in one of the homes of Jazz music, Church, as he is often called, developed his pocket playing style in the Black church where he played drums and sang regularly since he was 10 years old. In addition to his soulful storytelling through song, he also plays keys and guitar. Just recently entering his 30s, for the last 20 years. Kevin has been the Musical Director for R&B sensation Ginuwine and had played for Roy Ayers, Raheem DeVaughn and Ro James.
If one insists on comparing Church to his contemporaries it is safe to position him next to Anderson Paak with the lingering soul of BJ the Chicago Kid. Still, Kevin stands out because of his deep connection with his audiences, regardless of who they are. He could easily land on a playlist with Bobby Womack and Teddy Pendergrass as well as quartet gospel. His humility is evident through his emotional storytelling. Church should not be limited to Classic Soul, Jazz, Gospel, R&B songs because he also produces music for Rap and Hip-Hop artist while making guest appearances on the hooks to anchor the KC Rap scene. When Kevin took a moment to work on his own recording he wrote, performed and produced his first self-released EP, Kashmere, Sweaters and Bowties to a sold-out crowd at the historic Blue Room in 2017. In 2021 he released his grown and sexy second album, Brown Liquor Music. In 2023 he releases We Found Us with his fiancée.
