Kara Armstrong

 

Kara has worked professionally as an actor, stage manager, director and teaching artist for 16 years before taking on the role of Director of Arts Education at KCYA from 2012-2018. Kara is currently the Arts Education Program Director for the Carlsen Center at Johnson County Community College and remains actively connected to the Kansas City arts community.

 

Kara has held freelance teaching artist positions with the Coterie Theatre, Academy of the Arts, St. Peter’s School, Kansas City Repertory Theatre and was the Education Director for the Heart of America Shakespeare Festival for six years. As Education Director for the Festival, Kara created numerous new programs including Shakespeare Unbound, a three-week all girl summer camp in the urban core. Kara was also the co-founder, producer and director for her own theatre company, for which she directed several new works. Kara earned a B.A. in Theatre from Loyola University of Chicago and an M.A. in Theatre at the University of Missouri Kansas City.
