Acting and Theatre Classes

Does your little one like to act out stories and play pretend? Then this imaginative class is for them! Each week, students will take a journey to a faraway land. Children’s books, poems, costumes and props will be used to bring adventures to life. Teachers emphasize fun and students often lead the way. The final class will incorporate a sharing for parents to take part in the magic!

Imagination required! In this dynamic class students will use theatre games and improvisational scene work to study the fundamentals of performance. Warm-ups, vocal exercises, movement and character work will all be used to overcome inhibitions and awaken the inner actor. Students will learn the basics of rehearsing and performing simple scenes that will be shared with family and friends during the last class.

In this class students will increase their knowledge of how to create a character for the stage. Voice and diction, character movement and improvisation will all be used to hone their acting skills. The process of creating theatre will also be examined through the eyes of the playwright, director and designers. Come explore what makes someone else tick! Scene work will be shared with family and friends on the last day.

Become a triple threat! Students will sing, dance, and act their way into musical theatre. Students will focus on scenes and popular songs from Broadway Musicals. This creative and fun class teaches students how to combine the elements of musical theatre in an energetic and compelling manner. The class will culminate in a performance for family and friends.

Improvisational techniques, performance skills, and imagination are all it takes to create hilarious comedy sketches and improv scenes. No scripts or props needed! Students will work with a professional teaching artist to develop their own comedic style and put it all together for a performance for family and friends.

This advanced class will broaden students" improvisational techniques and sketch comedy experiences. This class will teach quick thinking and teamwork all while creating unique and hilarious characters. Students will work with a professional teaching artist to develop their own comedic style and put it all together for a performance for family and friends.

Main Street Players
This advanced acting class is for students who have already taken two or more acting (or performance) classes at KCYA and would like to have additional opportunities to perform. Class activities will include guest speakers from the KC acting community, audition workshops, musical theatre skill building, advanced scene work. Students will have performance opportunities outside of class.
