Artful Fools Day

Kansas City Young Audiences golden anniversary celebration began April 1 at First Fridays in the Crossroads.

KCYA's First Fridays ‘Artful Fools’ Day’ reception was a play on April Fools’ Day and celebrated the teaching artists and educators who work together with KCYA to ensure children have access to the arts.

Guests were greeted by jugglers as they entered the Mid-America Arts Alliance and then enjoyed live performances by KCYA teaching artists, the Lisa Henry Jazz trio, and Traditional Music Society.

Annual awards were also presented:

The Lighton Prize for Teaching Artist Excellence was awarded to Bird Fleming of Traditional Music Society.

The Distinguished Educator Award was presented to Catherine Hunt (center) of the Grandview School District.

Many thanks to event sponsors:  All Season Party and Tent Rental, Californos Catering, Needham Floral and Mid America Arts Alliance.

  • "The work these men (Recipe Poetry Guild) do with my students is amazing I am continually surprised that my traditionally mute students spark up and open up in these workshops. Also, I want to say that could see these gentlemen as visting artists in residence in the KCMO school district. They are so constructive and positive."    KC Public Schools Teacher
